I think that the history of evolution is an important topic to study in a philosophy of science class because it's a huge scientific theory but it's one that has been debated for years. In the first two chapters of the book we've learned how some scientists have come to the conclusion of evolution but also why other scientists are opposed to that theory. We can see how the concepts of science have changed over the years as scientists have gathered empirical data and drawn new conclusions about the earth and how it became what it is today. Philosophy is the study of wisdom so we can talk about how scientists acquired more wisdom about the world and the way it changes.
I found it very interesting that there are a couple different theories to evolution. In my personal experience, I have only been taught to believe the biblical explanation. Reading opposing theories has opened my mind and allowed me to see other theories, which have some good points. It's very interesting and I think it's important to learn all the theories and explanations...especially in philosophy. It's crucial to know all theories and think about how things have changed and why.
Like Nicci, growing up I have always disregarded the scientific theory of evolution. My focus has only been on the Biblical explanations of creation, through Genesis. Throughout this chapter, it has opened my eyes to the many possibilities and theories related to evolution and the creation of the world. The world is constantly being reassessed and reevaluated to reach a better conclusion of creation. It is interesting to see the different data each scientist gathers to reach their conclusions, for example fossils and dinousar bones. I believe we are studying the history of evolution to have a better understanding of the different theories that have come about over time.
What surprised me about the first two chapters is the different theories that are presented about evolution. Some scientists have come to the conclusion about evolution but there are others that are opposed to it just like Catie said. Learning about different theories of evolution is very important because it allows you to see other peoples perspectives about a very important issue that has been discussed for a long period of time. I think the main reason why we should study evolution is to understand how biological systems change over time. We also study evolution to understand the past and to predict the future, and to organize our world.
In the first two chapters (and in general), what surprised me is that there is widely accepted viewpoint of evolution. I would think with all of our research, knowledge, and technology, we would have reached that point by now. There are scientists who will agree with other scientists and others who will disagree. The fact that we currently don't have a standard view of evolution is also presents some good, in the fact that we can come up with our opinions on the matter. In my viewpoint, biblical accounts cannot really prove anything. I have more faith in scientific reason.
I think that we are studying evolution to develop our own opinions on it. If we ever reach the point that we have an accepted view, we will see if our opinions ever line up with that view.

I think the study of evolution is surprising in general. To know that so many years ago people were putting together theories on how humans got here and how animals evolved is magnificent. Even though we presently have the technology it takes to further our education on the history of evolution the people hundreds of years ago did their research without computers or high tech equipment that we have today. I think studying evolution is important because it shows us or gives us one explanation of how the world began. Whether we take this idea of evolution and believe in it is ultimately up to our beliefs. The biggest contradiction to evolution is religion and the belief of creation from a higher power. People are not willing to believe in both things so they think they have to take sides and believe in either evolution or religion. I think the most settling and logical way of thinking here is to believe in evolution after a higher power gave way to the earth being created. I believe we are studying evolution to get a better understanding of where we came from or the possibilities of how humans and nature was created. I believe it is important to have a grasp or an opinion on what we believe happened millions of years ago, therefor it is important to study evolution.
We are talking about the history of evolution because its the arguably the most profound scientific theory ever. It has such an impact because it puts humans in the same category as animals. It unifies all life and if we learn all of evolution's details could explain the origin of life or the origin of humans. Many of the ideas posted above hint at a common mistake by many people when they think about evolution. That mistake is thinking of evolution as creationism. They automatically think evolution's sole concept is to replace creationism, but evolution explains how life changes over the course of generations. Evolution can be seen and studied in minutes because the generation of a bacteria can be as quick as 20 minutes. I think it's also important to understand that one can still believe in God if they believe in evolution. It takes something special out there somewhere to create the initial spark that started this whole thing we call life.
As a biology major, nothing really surprised me about the first two chapters of this text. I have been hearing about evolution quite often and even have a class on it currently. The thing that i find most intriguing on this subject is the fact that we have so much evidence on this subject to consider it a theory yet there are so many unanswered questions that we are continuing to look into. Also when we do make advances, many critics will focus on what we still haven't been able to answer and ignore the findings and what they mean. I belief we are reading this text because what scientific issue out there has more of an impact on the world as a whole. The one problem that people have is that there is many misconceptions about the theory of evolution and it causes people to ignore the evidence available for it. But in order to understand how why we do and act they way we do today is we must learn about our entire past. This is what evolution is attempting to answer for us.
