Can Wanting to Believe Make Us Believers?

This interview with a philosopher of science talks about the place of science now and the place of belief earlier in our history.  What do you think the appropriate balance between faith and science should be?

What do you think about reconciling science and religion?  Catholics, many mainstream Protestants, Islam, and at least reformed Judaism each see science and religion as quite compatible.  You also saw a TED talk with Francis Collins, head of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) who also sees science and religion as perfectly compatible.  Here's more from Dr. Collins:

  1. I would like to think that religion and science are perfectly okay coexisting. I am a catholic and i do believe in evolution. It gets touchy when one side tries to disprove the other. Thats when the problems arise. We do not know enough to be able to disprove one or the other and there is no need to even try. We do not know where we came from and that question will most likely always be asked. Why can't a higher power of started everything and allowed our world to develop into what it is today? That is just one opinion. Also i think another problem with these two sides struggling to get along is that there are plenty of misconceptions for both that you need to understand before trying to make your final judgement.
