Science Autobiographies

Dear Class,

Post your science autobiographies here, and please comment on at least two of your classmates' posts.

My science autobiography:
My dad was an engineering and helped me with my mathematics, which I really liked.  In middle school we had field trips to biology field sites and really enjoyed what I learned in and outside the classroom.  I took biology, anatomy & physiology, and physics in high school and really liked them.  In college I took a natural science course that focused on evolution and the extinction of dinosaurs, but nothing more from the "hard sciences."  But, I loved thinking about medicine and especially ethical issues in science and medicine and so I went to graduate school to study medical ethics.  I ended up studying philosophy of science for my Ph.D.   My dissertation looked at feminist criticism in philosophy of science, particularly in computer science.  Here at Thomas More, I try to hang out with the scientists as much as possible and in my professional research and teaching I focus on medical ethics, research ethics, death & dying, and philosophy of science.

I love philosophy of science and cannot wait to delve more into this course material with you!

  1. My name is Kevin I am completing my final semester this Fall. I am a Sports Marketing major. I've never been a fan of science; any form of it. It's just never grabbed my attention. Always thought it was boring and not that interesting. I'm not even a fan of science shows that you can find on TV like the national geographic. Bill Nye might be the only thing in science that I've ever enjoyed. There is a chance studying the philosophy of science might be of more interest, but we'll see.

    4. Science is definitely not for everyone, but I think that this class will have a lot to offer and a lot of surprising aspects. This will definitely not be like any science class I have taken.

  2. Hello my name is Joshua Hunter who is currently a Sophomore here at Thomas More. I am a member of the football team and is currently a Communications major with a business minor. Science for me has always been something I excelled at in school, but I never have had a huge interest in it. In high school I have taken: Environmental Science, Physics, Chemistry and Astronomy so I do have a wide range of knowledge. I do enjoy to watch animal planet learning about the world other than humans. Still, I have never really been excited to learn about science. Physics was a bit tougher for me because I did not really like the topics and felt I did not need to know this to be successful in my career I wanted after college. I looked at it as more of something I have had to know to get through school. However, I do have an open mind, which makes it possible for me to gain a new found love for science. I hope that it all works out and I can find something that will catch my eye.

    3. I think that physics is only for future rocket scientists. It's too hard for people trying to pursue something else.

    4. I'm a Communications major too!! We probably have some other classes together. I also didn't think anyone else had taken Astronomy in high school. I thought my school was odd for offering it.

    5. That's awesome that you got to take an Astronomy class in high school. Astronomy is one of my favorite science subjects!

I enjoyed Physics for the concepts but I always struggled with the math that was involved in Physics because it was so complex and hard to remember which formula to use in each specific situation.

  3. My name is Adam Dickman and i am currently a junior working on my bachelor degree in business administration. Science has always intrigued me. As a child, I remember doing experiments with batteries and circuits in school and with my parents. In middle school, I went on a field trip to COSI in Columbus which was really exciting. Other than that, I took a physics class in high school and watch shows on the science channel occasionally. Since I somewhat enjoy science, I feel that this course will be not just informational, but interesting as well.

    2. I volunteered at COSI my sophomore year of high school. I actually did not feel like I was smart enough to work there...which is why I am criminal justice major instead of a science major.

  4. My name is Nate Dorsey and I am a senior biology major. In high school, I saw science classes as just something I had to take, but I excelled at them. Today I enjoy science because it teaches us how the world around us works. Another reason I enjoy science is because it is my ticket to getting into my hopeful career of dentistry.

    2. I also excelled in science classes in high school, but I'm afraid understanding the philosophy behind science will be more difficult. But as you said, we need to truly understand science to better understand the world we live in.

  5. Hello my name is Joe Paolucci. I am a sophomore and a criminal justice major. I have always liked bein outside and doing outside things such as playing football, shooting guns, going fishing and so on. And also I have also liked the science shows such as national geographic. But I have never liked science class probably because I was never very good at remembering the formulas that go along with it. This class looks to be interesting and I'm looking forward to see how it goes

    1. I feel you on the "never liking science class" part. Although I did sort of enjoy the sciences, I found them quite challenging...even though I excelled in them.I hope this class goes well!

    2. It is interesting to see that you dislike science due to having to remember formulas. The formulas are my guide to understanding science, without them I'd be lost.

      Delete
    3. I am awful at remembering formulas! And you probably already know this but I am a Criminal Justice major too so I guess we are both taking this class to fulfill a philosophy requirement.

      Delete
    4. This class should be more open-ended and less formula based. There are no formulas in philosophy, only complicated viewpoints!

      Delete
    5. Formulas will forever be the death of me - Math and Science, you name it. Whenever I would see formula after formula in school, my brain would automatically go, "All aboard the Nope Train!!" because trying to memorize and understand was a tragic train wreck. Yet, at the same time - like you, I definitely like doing things outdoors. Being outdoors is an entirely different ballpark for me. Probably because I don't have to think, "So...what does this formula mean in English??"

Instead, I'm more like, "Oh hey, I caught a fish!! Guys, I found Nemo!!" which is so much less stressful.

  7. Hello, my name is Nicci Stemler. I am a sophomore. My dad is an Civil Engineer so growing up he always helped me with math and science. I currently work with him doing structural and home reviews for his business, so my dad is always discussing physics and math with me. In high school I took biology, chemistry, physics, and anatomy. In my anatomy class we dissected almost every animal possible, which I though was so intriguing! I am now a Middle School Education major concentrating on math and science! This past summer I went with my adviser to a dissection presentation we did at her kids school--and I loved it! For fun these days I even watch science videos on the discovery channel. I also love to watch medical based TV shows!

  8. Hello, my name is Madison White. This year I am a sophomore, majoring in Early Childhood Education. Prior to this class, I have taken basic science classes throughout middle school and high school. In middle school I was a part of a G.A.T.E. program where we attended a field trip to COSI, which I remember as being very intriguing. Throughout high school I took biology, physics, and chemistry classes where I seemed to do very well. I enjoy science when I am able to incorporate mathematical equations to find the solution. I am able to record data and solve scientific problems, but my faults lie in having a deep understanding of the subject matter. I plan on using the class as a guide to better understanding science and the reasoning behind it. This class may be difficult, but will be very beneficial for me!

  9. Hey guys, my name is Sammy Hawkins and I am a sophomore criminal justice major. I am taking class because it was recommended to me by an upperclassman and I decided to try it even though I have never been an A student in science. Philosophy, on the other hand, I am not too sure about this is the first actual philosophy class I am taking. It sounds intimidating but oh well here’s to trying new things and actually trying to enjoy science and philosophy. As I said when I was introducing myself my past science teachers have not been the best at explaining things to me so I lost interest pretty quickly. I guess science has never been on my favorite subject list except for middle school but I honestly believe it is because I was never introduced to hands on science and learn better with hands on activities even though that sounds like a middle school thing to say. I am a counselor for a math and science camp, though. It may sound contradictory to what I have just written but it is a hands on camp and it’s nice to watch the campers experience what I never did. So that’s my story about science and I am entering this course open minded to the material and will try my best to comprehend and participate in this class.

    1. I think it is interesting that you are going out on a limb and trying this class. I agree with you on this class sounding intimidating. It should challenge us to think critically in the sciences, which is always a process.

    2. I think many people like that middle school, hands-on approach. I sure did in my high school physics class. Well, the hands on stuff was the only reason I got through that course. Anyways, it sounds like you will be intrigued by this class, having that you haven't taken a traditional science course at TMC yet.

  10. My name is Allison Moning. I am a sophomore Computer and Information Sciences major here at TMC. I have always been interested in Math and Science. My interest in Computer Science originally came from my dad. From the time I was very young, we had computers at our house and I always loved playing computer games and browsing the internet. I eventually started to realize that I learned very quickly when it came to fixing any problems that the computer would have. It wasn't until High School though, that I realized I wanted to pursue a career in Computer Science. I took many science courses in high school such as Biology, Geophysics, Chemistry, Forensics, and Physics. I am taking this class because I find science very interesting and I am always excited to learn more. I am looking forward to a great semester!

  11. I am Ran Liwag, currently a sophomore on the way to completing a major in Information Sciences with a minor in Accountancy.

I have always been fascinated with the way information works -- how it flows, is stored and retrieved. We now live in an information-driven and -dependent world, so I believe that my career path will reward me with success. I consider myself to be well-versed with most technology. Anything computer-related comes quickly to me, and my interest in it grows constantly. I mainly run Linux, enjoyed building robots for regional / national competitions in high school, and cannot wait to get the "new and cool things."

I find science in general to be interesting and wondrous (computer science also counts as science). Why is DNA a double helix? Is string theory true? Why can everything not proven within the cosmos? Without it, I think that we wouldn't be as advanced and have diverse viewpoints on many subjects.

Also, philosophy is even more wondrous to me. I have taken a philosophy class before, and it has caused me to ask myself existential questions ever since. I am excited, because this class will show me another aspect of philosophy.

  12. Hello, my name is Tori Liles. I am a sophomore studying environmental science. I have always been drawn to science basically because I wasn't good at anything else, especially math. I became most intrigued in the subject during high school when my biology, chemistry, and physics classes required many different experiments. I found that I had a much easier time passing those types of class because they peaked my interest. Those experiences have put me on a path to pursue a science degree here at Thomas More, where my confidence in this field has increased. This confidence has mainly come from the chemistry and biology labs that I took my freshman year, because I actually enjoyed going! (plus the lab coat and goggles made me feel pretty cool). Therefore I'm looking forward to learning about philosophy of science.

  13. Hey everyone!! My name is Lindy Gamble. I'm a second semester sophomore, even though I'm 21. I transferred from Notre Dame College of Ohio. I was in their Early Childhood Ed Program for two years and recently I moved back home to Cincinnati to work/save up in order to return to school. I'm now a Communications major and you can find me with the TMC color guard!! Also, as you get to know me better, I love to make people laugh. So, I'll just let you run like a liar with their pants on fire with that piece of information.

Ironically, my mother is a retired priest, but she was also a Math and Science teacher for over 30 years. I always thought the two occupations clashed. But, if you ask her, she'll say, "Sometimes, yes. But, then you have to ask yourself: who caused the Big Bang??" - which, by the way - LOVE "The Big Bang Theory". Bazinga!!
That being said, I'm adopted and have a completely different set of brainwaves, obviously. I always felt like her answer left me in the middle of the cornfields like that one poor, lost, and lonely cow that gets sucked up by the alien spaceship. Math and Science are my worst subjects - Communication and different languages, I continue to excel. I'm the complete opposite of my mother, so I was never wholeheartedly into Science. I don't hate Science, it's just difficult for me to understand at times. But, if I had to choose, Astronomy would be my first choice of things to discuss. I'm really hoping this class will help me to have more of an understanding, overall.

  14. Hello everyone, my name is Tyler Cohorn and I am a junior here at TMC. I am a Business Administration major. I have never really had any interest in science but maybe this course will change that. The only interest I have in science is some of the tv shows like animal planet and the national geographic channel. The only time I really enjoyed science was in 4th grade when I had to participate in the science fair. It actually turned out to be a really good experience and I took away a lot of useful information that helped me down the road.

    3. I am with you Goose when you said you do not have a big interest in science. I also agree that I do have an open mind to beginning to like it. Still, I think that I could not gain an interest so far in science because of the types of science that we had to learn. Chemistry and Physics are two of the hardest things I have ever had to learn during school.

  15. Hi, my name is Jordan Pike. I am a sophomore and I am majoring in accounting. My interest for science is in the middle, I don't get excited about it, but I also don't dislike science. Maybe this class will change that and persuade me one way or the other, hopefully to liking science more. I've enjoyed some science classes and others not so much. So I'm not sure how I really feel about it, I like doing experiments, but some of the information that I learn about doesn't intrigue me like other topics. I look forward to changing my view on science and learn a lot of useful information to take with me after this class is over.

  18. Hey Everyone, My name is Andy Bramer and I am a Senior biology major/philosophy minor. The area of biology that fascinates me the most is epidemiology, but I also enjoy studying organisms (non-human, that is) and the communities they form (with each other). I'm a fairly curious individual, always looking to broaden my intellectual horizons. As such, I'm never opposed to learning about other branches of science (physics, chemistry, etc.). This class seems to be the perfect marriage of two of my favorite subjects and I cannot wait for the stimulating discussions that we will have over the course of the semester. To quote the great Bill Nye, "Science Rules!"

  19. Hey guys my name is Catie Luck and I'm a Senior Physics major with a minor in Math. I've always really liked math/science and knew that I wanted to pursue a career in them so I decided to become a physics major. My original plan was to go to grad school and become an engineer but now that I've taken so many different kinds of physics classes I'm not sure what I want to do anymore. I spent this past summer at the University of Notre Dame doing research in the radiation lab which was awesome because I got some hands on experience on something that I could possibly do as a career. It was also super cool to spend the summer on a campus like Notre Dame. Science has always been interesting to me but I'm excited to look at science from a philosophical view in this class since it will be so different than what I've been used to for the past 3 years taking physics classes.
